interview: annette cannock - wish |

Annette Cannock started WISH ten years ago, and with a lot of hard work and dedication she has developed the brand into one of Australia’s favourite fashion labels.
We profiled Annette this month and found out more about the WISH label:
B&L: How did you get started as a designer?
Annette: I started making and selling my designs at the markets. In 1999 the demand was so high that I had to move to a little studio in Surry Hills where I could concentrate on designing a full collection.

B&L: How would you describe the WISH label?
Annette: WISH is a label that keeps up with the latest trends while adding our own unique ‘spin’ to designs. Wish is trendy, fun-loving and stylish… with a dash of sass for good measure!
Our core collection of dresses, tops, skirts and pants aims at providing the WISH girl with a fashionable and versatile wardrobe for both day and night.
B&L: What will we be seeing for WISH Autumn/Winter 2009?
Annette: The WISH winter collection is very rock chick with plenty of lace, leather and fur. There is a lot of hardware in the designs such as chains, eyelets and exposed zippers on sheer and satin fabrics.
Military jackets, lace tights and harem pants are key pieces in our range.
B&L: Where do you get your inspiration?
Annette: From overseas catwalks to people-spotting on the streets of Paris, New York and Milan….you just never know where you will find that season’s muse! For each collection we will check out the trends and take inspiration from the overseas catwalks and give them a distinctive ‘Australian edge’.
I also keep a close eye on what the local and international celebrities are wearing, they are a good indication of what’s hot and what’s not!

B&L: What do you love most about Australian fashion?
Annette: I think what makes Aussie fashion so fun is we pull looks from every corner of the globe and give them our own spin.
We can make rubber thongs look cool and aren’t afraid to mix and match designer labels with more affordable brands.
B&L: How would you describe your personal style?
Annette: I am a directional dresser with a vintage edge. I love surrendering to the latest trends but I put my own spin on them by adding vintage accessories for a unique look.
My real fashion weakness is handbags… a woman can never have too many bags!

B&L: What has been the highlight of your career so far?
Annette: We have had so many highlights over the past 10 years. I still get a buzz when I’ll be strolling through a department store or boutique and suddenly come across my designs. It’s also a very satisfying feeling when you see WISH customers out and about wearing WISH with confidence.
B&L: What is it like dressing celebrities like Lizzie Lovette and Kate Ritchie?
Annette: WISH has dressed famous faces such as Lizzy Lovette, Lyndsey Rodrigues, Paulini, Tahyna Tozzi, Maz Compton, Lee Furlong and Erin McNaught. We love having these girls into our showroom. We take them through the collections and they try on outfits for different events, shows or just for everyday wear. It’s a great buzz to then see them in the papers or on TV wearing our designs.
B&L: What should every woman have in her wardrobe?
Annette: A good fitting pair of jeans is a fashion staple.
